Retro Futurism Commences Friday 2 November 2012

The first episode of Retro Futurism will air on the Tabula Rasa slot Friday 2 November midnight to 2am on Melbourne's Triple R 102.7FM and broadcast on the net www.rrr.org.au.

Episode One - Pioneers will explore the roots of futurist music in early twentieth century composition. Following the collapse of tonality after the excesses of Wagnerian romanticism composers looked for new ways to express the experience of contemporary reality. Modernist artistic movements from Futurism to Dadaism fostered further developments, as did trailblazers from the New World, unhindered by tradition, along with the development of electronics.

Retro Futurism looks backward to look forward, celebrating musical modernists working on the edges of composition, improvisation, quantisation, from Schoenberg to Sun Ra, from Darmstadt to Detroit, from violin to VST, from yesterday to tomorrow...

From the harmonic revolutions of Vienna, the Impressionist mists of Paris, through the serial, aleatoric, stochastic, concrete, electro-acoustic, improvisation and electronic experiments made throughout the twentieth and twenty first centuries, as well as songs about spaceships, robots and the cosmos.

Retro Futurism is future music, regardless of heritage.
